Asma Islam
Cllr Asma Islam is a Labour and Co-operative councillor in Tower Hamlets, with a long-standing record of public service and grassroots activism. She has held several senior leadership positions within the council, including serving as Cabinet Member for Environment and Planning, where she led on policies to tackle the climate emergency and deliver sustainable urban development across the borough. Asma also served as Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, driving transparency, accountability, and better outcomes for residents across local services.
A passionate campaigner for housing justice, Asma’s commitment to fair and decent housing is deeply rooted in her own lived experience, growing up in a council home and understanding the life changing impact that safe, secure, and affordable housing can have. She has been a consistent advocate for investment in social housing and for raising standards across the sector. She champions stronger accountability from housing associations and management companies, believing that tenants’ voices must be central to housing decisions.
Asma also served as a board member for Tower Hamlets Homes, the Arms-Length Management Organisation (ALMO) responsible for managing council housing on behalf of the borough. In this role, she worked to improve service delivery, tenant engagement, and operational oversight.
Her campaigning work focuses on creating a fairer borough where everyone, regardless of background can live with dignity and opportunity. She has been especially active on issues around housing inequality, community safety, environmental justice.
Asma continues to be a driving force for progressive change in Tower Hamlets. With a clear vision for a more equal and sustainable future, she remains committed to delivering for residents and ensuring the voices of ordinary people are heard at every level of local government. She currently works for a Member of Parliament, leading on casework, housing, and community engagement.
