02.11.22: Challenging the stigma of social housing, with Mercy Denedo & Amanze Ejiogu

Research carried out in two North East universities has revealed that social housing stigma impacts every aspect of residents’ lives.  In Stigma and Social Housing in England  published in July 2021, Dr Mercy Denedo (Durham University Business School) and Dr Amanze Ejiogu (Newcastle University Business School) found that stigma was evident in interactions with a wide range of agencies that residents came into contact with – local councils, housing providers, employment agencies, neighbours, the police, local GP surgeries, and schools – that these interactions frequently impacted negatively on the life chances of residents.

The researchers followed this with a consultation with tenants about what could be done to reduce the stigma, and to create a stronger and more effective tenant voice.

Mercy and Amanze will be revealing what tenants said, and suggesting ways to build a housing system free of such stigma.
